The transitional space. Generative Artificial Intelligence as an opportunity for growth

Abstract

This theoretical paper offers an interpretation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) as an opportunity for growth for individuals and in particular for the professional development of teachers. It argues that GAI systems foster a metacognitive standpoint in human partners, implying that the latter necessarily draw on their own knowledge in the prompt formulation and output analysis phases. This evocative nature is joined by a transitional one: GAI systems are objects, phenomena that stand for the “external” knowledge, that of the corpus of training data, only indirectly, i.e., through standing for an “internal” knowledge, that of the human partner. Consequently, interaction with these systems represents a transitional space, a neutral playing field where internal and external realities coexist. It is a collaborative experience during which new ideas emerge, while others may evolve or take on a specific form. In order to create an active partnership with AI aimed at growth, it is emphasized that teachers are called to be metacognitive professionals who possess complex knowledge that provides for a dynamic relationship between technology, pedagogy and the content of the subject taught.

Author Biography

Alessandro Iannella, University of Pisa

Alessandro Iannella (1994) is an educational technologist. He has both technical skills related to the design and implementation of learning environments and online courses, and knowledge of instructional design. He graduated in Humanities (L-10) and Digital Humanities (LM-43).

Currently freelance, he works with publishing houses Guerini and Giappicchelli and with the “Luigi Bocconi” University in the design and development of digital learning environments and tools, with particular reference to e-learning experiences dedicated to higher education. He was project manager and instructional designer of executive courses for SDA Bocconi business school, and digital humanist and media educator at Future Education Modena International Research Centre.

For the academic year 2022/23 he is adjunct professor of Learning Management Systems at the University of Pisa, Sociology of New Media at the University of Milan and Advanced Specialized Pedagogy at the University of Turin. For the academic year 2021/22 he taught Computer Science and Teaching and Learning Technologies in several degree courses (Humanities, Cultural Heritage, Education Sciences, Education Sciences for Nursery and Primary School, and Valorization and Sustainable Development of Mountain Areas) at the University of Milan and at the University of Turin. He has been an adjunct professor at the University of Milan since 2017 and at the University of Turin since 2020. In the academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 he was Academic Tutor of Teaching and Learning Technologies at the University "Ca' Foscari" of Venice in the context of the incoming training of middle and high school teachers (PF24 CFU).

He has published several articles on the topic of educational technologies, with papers ranging from proposals on didactic and pedagogical issues — in particular in the field of teaching classics and metacognition —, to digital humanities (see Journal Papers et similia). In 2015 he won the special prize of the HACKATON #Upgrade (Toscana Area Giovani) for the design of the geography and history teaching application "GeoStorie". In 2017 he won the Best Paper Award of the Didamatica Conference (AICA) for a project on technologies applied to Latin teaching.

Alessandro Iannella had the opportunity to observe the application of educational technology in several contexts: from pre-school to post-graduate training. In terms of technical and development he is an expert in Learning Management Systems (Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Open edX...), Content Management Systems (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal...) and digital learning and e-learning authoring tools (Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, H5P...). In addition, he has acquired expertise in the fields of web design and digital publishing (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign), UI/UX design (Adobe XD), audio-video editing (iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut), web programming (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), Semantic Web languages (OWL 2, RDF, RDF Schema, SPARQL) and the development of conversational agents (Dialogflow).
